On April 19, 2026, I participated in a traditional martial arts demonstration tournament organized by the NPO Tokushima Prefecture Traditional Martial Arts Association at Ataka Sumiyoshi Shrine in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture—the only shrine in Japan known as the deity of overcoming great challenges.

We were able to successfully perform the A-shu Yagyu Shinkage-ryu martial arts swordsmanship and the A-shu Yagyu Shinkage-ryu martial arts ritual—traditions passed down to Tokushima from the Azuchi-Momoyama period and still preserved today at the Kyubukan Dojo—at Ataka Sumiyoshi Shrine. Ataka Sumiyoshi Shrine is a renowned shrine that attracts many visitors, featuring the Ataka Checkpoint—famous from the play *Kanjincho*—and a kyudo (archery) range within its grounds.

The weather was fine on the day of the event, and many visitors had come to pay their respects.

This marked the fifth time Kubukan has participated in this event.

We were graciously hosted by Chief Priest Kitamura and the shrine staff, and we truly had a wonderful time.

We hope to participate with even more members next year.
