On July 12, I participated in the Mount Tsurugi Summit Kobudo Demonstration Tournament, organized by the NPO Tokushima Prefecture Kobudo Association, at the Tsurugi-san Hongu Hozuki-ishi Shrine, located at the summit of Mount Tsurugi—a symbol of the people of Tokushima Prefecture.

I was able to demonstrate the A-shu Yagyu Shinkage-ryu swordsmanship, which was introduced to Tokushima during the Azuchi-Momoyama period and is still preserved today at the Kyubukan Dojo.

Mount Tsurugi has been revered since ancient times as a sacred mountain of martial arts faith, and the famous local confection, the “Grape Manju,” was created as a result of this tradition.

However, while there are new challenges such as the waning of mountain worship and the aging of the local parishioners, many people were visiting the mountain due to the recent hiking boom.

The weather made for a wonderful day, offering a sense of both the austere and warm atmosphere befitting a sacred mountain.
